Those of us who struggle with stress tend to ruminate on negative thoughts and feelings about a situation. While it’s normal to feel a certain amount of anxiety and fear, the more you spend time mulling over these negative thoughts, the less clear-headed you will be about what’s happening in your life and what steps to take next.

Visualisation

Try practising this technique for 15 to 20 minutes a day, says Scott Dehorty, LCSW-C of Delphi Behavioral Health. You may want to start out by doing shorter bouts of a few minutes when you’re feeling anxious and let it build up to longer periods over time.

Breathing Deeply

Long, slow breaths are the number one way to calm yourself down quickly. According to Dehorty, your body’s fight-or-flight response begins to slow down when you take a deep breath in. Then, breathe out slowly as you focus on your breathing.

The more you practise this, the better at it you’ll be able to do on your own when you need it. Just take a few minutes and concentrate on your breathing and you’ll likely be able to slow down your emotions and feel much more relaxed.

Think About Your Positives

People who are mentally calm and stable always remind themselves that nothing lasts forever, so it’s okay if things don’t go exactly how we planned them to. This allows them to see problems as opportunities for learning and growth, rather than as threats that can derail their lives.

They’re also able to view stressful situations as opportunities for problem-solving and creativity, not as potential pitfalls. This approach to coping with stressful situations helps them keep their heads above water, so to speak, and can even help them learn valuable lessons that they can use later in their professional and personal lives.

Keeping yourself mentally stable is not easy, but it can be a key component of achieving your personal and professional goals. Developing resilience, focusing on what’s important, and finding purpose and meaning in life can help you be calm and confident in the face of any challenge.
